Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Specialist

Founded in 2000, ERG is an environmental consulting small business providing National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), Cultural Resources, Natural Resources, Compliance, Restoration, and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) services to federal, state, local/municipal, and commercial clients across the United States. ERG is headquartered in Baltimore, Maryland, and operates AmaTerra, ERG Texas Services, out of Austin, Texas to provide Texas state-wide services. We are a value-driven, employee-first company. Successful candidates must have 1) a college degree or equivalent professional experience in geography, environmental sciences, or a closely related field and 2) a minimum of 5 years of professional GIS experience with demonstrated capabilities in GIS tools, workflows, and deliverables. Position will be in the Austin, TX office - or remote and salary ranges from $60k - $80k.

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities include:
  • Strong Proficiency in Esri products (ArcGIS PRO, ArcGIS Online, Survey123, Field Maps, etc)
  • Ability to independently manage multiple assignments, determine and set job task priorities, and work with limited direct supervision
  • Ability to process data and graphics requests from project team members and assist with streamlining workflows and updating templates to maximize efficiency and consistency
  • Strong understanding of geodatabases and geodatabase applications
  • Experience working in a collaborative, multi-disciplined environment with professionals distributed across the United States
  • Ability to effectively apply Cartographic and Data Visualization methods
  • Experience working with CAD files (dwg/dgn), KMZ, SHP and GDB files
  • Ability to write clear and succinct Standard Operating Procedures and Guidance Documents for GIS team
  • Familiarity with GPS (standard and GNSS/RTK/VRS) operation- uploading, downloading, data processing, and data presentation
  • Strong Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other standard Office applications
  • Experience with environmental, NEPA, or planning Analysis
  • Ability to read and interpret building and site plans and specifications
The ideal candidate will have demonstrable professional GIS experience in environmental analysis or infrastructure planning fields. Additional preferred experience:
  • FAA Part 107 Certification and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV; aka "Drone") mapping and documentation
  • Experience with environmental regulatory compliance of transportation and/ or infrastructure projects at the federal, state, or local levels
  • Experience working in a billable environment, where time management plays a key role in developing project methods and strategies
  • Experience with quality control / internal peer review best practices
  • Experience with Python for data analysis, tool development, data processing, and or visualization
  • Experience with Javascript, HTML, and/ or CSS for web application development
  • Experience using AI tools for Image Analysis and geography-based "Big Data" processing and interpretation
  • Experience processing census data for environmental justice or socioeconomic analysis
  • Experience with Traffic Noise Modelling using FHWA's model, TNM 2.5
The successful candidate will assist in leading the GIS team to support subject-matter discipline leads and project managers create high value deliverables on time and under budget. You will regularly:
  1. Provides GIS support for the other disciplines including, but not limited to: Biology, Cultural Resources, Compliance, Restoration, Waters of the US, and NEPA
  2. Process census data for Community Impacts Analyses
  3. Generate GIS-based maps, illustrations, data tables, data models, etc. from public GIS datasets and/or field-collected data
  4. Assemble time-sensitive information to create Field Maps and Survey 123 applications for surveys
  5. Review, assess, and translate (as necessary) externally provided GIS data for use in ERG's internal systems
  6. Update and maintain internal GIS datasets and templates for accuracy and performance
  7. Participate in internal QC process to ensure our deliverables are consistent, include necessary data, and are legible
  8. Respond to requested revisions and updates on GIS deliverables in a friendly, cooperative manner
  9. Create publication-ready maps and figures for regulatory correspondence, reports, and other deliverables
  10. Update SOPs and guidance docs for GIS Team or Field Technician use
  11. Troubleshoot technical issues
  12. Look for opportunities beyond the day-to-day to expand and enhance the company's capabilities through improved methods, systems, hardware and software, etc.
